Yesterday i watched the movie Mindwalk. The movie is loosely based on the book ” Turning point” written by Fritjof Capra. Capra earned a Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Vienna in 1966. He is one of many scientists that are concerned about where our world is heading. Sustainability is something he, and a lot of other scientists, speak about.
Perhaps one of the most obvious signs for the lack of sustainability is the stock market. We monitor the changes in the value of the shares in real time and do it as frequent as every minute. Its about the same with currencies. The value of money goes up and down in real time. The very foundation of our system – the economical system, is unstable. Over the past 15-20 years we have seen a dramatic change in companies annual reporting. The time and importance between them has shrunk a lot – and so has the time to react.
Native American indians did decisions with the seventh coming generation in mind. It is a totally different mindset than the “modern humans” have. We definitely have things to learn from the native Indians way of thinking when it comes to sustainability. We are of course in a very different situation. We have an advanced technology and can react faster to changes. We are more a global society than a local one. There are many fundamental differences.
We are about to make big changes. We know we have to. More and more people are aware that a much longer sustainability has to be achieved in many areas. We cannot foresee seven generations ahead. We are not in some kind of total control. We will probably never have total control. But if we have the mindset and the goal then we will have a much higher rate of control. One thing is for sure. It seems to be clear for more and more people. To achieve sustainability we have to start listen to other people then the financial “scientists”. Part 2 about this subject comes tomorrow
