I personally know quite a lot people that work in different organisations that tries to make the world a better place. I also know a lot of volunteers who tries to do the same. They are growing in numbers. That’s a clear sign that there is a lot to make better. Sustainability is one thing these organisations and individuals have as a “root solution”.
It is clear to me that all these organisations shows us that the system has failed to make the world a better place. I know that not all agree to this. I also know that there are some things that are better, well… I´ll rephrase that – there are some things that could make it better. What i mean is that we don’t use things for doing good it seems. Either we have profit in mind or we just misuse them. The computerisation of our society is an example, and this is by far the most important paradigm shift humans are undergoing. So much of the efforts we put in in this huge change is about controlling people. The computerising of the society could make us more free. Now it makes us loose more and more jobs. For 20-25 years ago we could see people in the graphic/printing industry loosing jobs. Since then people have been loosing jobs in many areas. (sure it created some jobs but not as many as we´ve lost). The other day i was talking to a journalist friend of mine. He works for one of the big newspapers. In order to cut costs and be more competitive they now have to do a lot more of the different jobs of the jobs that finally comes out as news. They have to make the research, the booking of people, the interview, take pictures, the writing, the headlines, the graphic layout etc etc. He says they don’t have time to do a proper job any longer. Well.. i knew this is happening right now. I worked in the TV broadcasting area for many years and saw all this coming, and its even worse there.
Sustainability doesn’t come from competition. It comes from cooperation. Cooperation doesn’t come from monopoly with profit as a goal. A system with competition and profit as a goal cant look ahead seven generations. Tomorrow comes part 3

Our next magazine is themed on the benefits of cooperation and collaboration among charities helping homeless and other vulnerable people. If we just see others as competitors there will never be “enough” money. If we share the knowledge and resources we have and tap into volunteers from communities and from the people using the services then there is so much extra resource. That’s the secret – but its not easy to make it work it takes time, building trust and being reliable and well as sharing a vision, ethics and a commitment to get on with things. Phew that’s our task for 2009 then.
I´m glad you made this comment. We are still not aware enough to realise that it IS the people that has the power. But we will learn, and there are people/systems that work now. In London there are more than 40 Timebanks (and also some LETS systems)
