Get rich in Second Life™ – part 3

There has been a dramatic change in some product lines. They haven’t had the full impact yet. Its the digital revolution we´re right now are in. By having a computer you can skip some other hardware. Some of the hardware became software. That goes for record players, recording equipment, typewriters, sound mixers, video switchers… you name it. They are all softwares now and can be updated easily and cheap or for free. A lot of products are sold in SL with lifetime update. That is a HUGE change in business. Maybe a model for RL to develop? Instead we have virus protaction softwares that is out of function within 1-3 years – its just the opposite :(

You may say that a hardware CD player is better than a software mp3 player. First of all we´re talking about a binary system. There are 2 figures and that’s 1 and 0. Those two figures are used to make a long chain and that chain gives the software its function and quality. It´s all about how the binary figures are placed actually. Then the sound or video file, or any file made up by the 2 figures and is a “playable file”, also are made up by binary figures. Its obvious to most of us that the quality of the digital files and software has changed a lot over the years and I’m sure it will improve a lot more.

I’m sure that some people in SL make a living by selling their products. Some sell it with lifetime updates. Its obvious that if they have a lifetime update system they will earn less. Are they stupid or are they just not greedy? In my mind they are truly changing the business model to have much less greed involved.

There are some other differences too to purely digital products. The copy is the same quality as the original. The product can be saved in many versions and is there intact to be developed. You don’t have to start from scratch every time.

It´s basically the same rules we deal with in SL and in RL to get rich. Getting rich means, for most people, getting a lot of money. But is that really to be rich? Is that the only way we count when we say rich or can we redifine the word rich?  Part 4 tomorrow

  1. It’s interesting to me that one of the first things people try to do in SL is to make money. Its a world where you can in principle live without it. You dont need to buy food, pay rent, heat your home, own land or even buy clothes (so many are free). People need money for real life but not for SL. Yet people do want things that cost. Land in particular so they can organise things their own way. Then they get into asking visitors for money.

If there was no financial system in SL how would people behave differently?

Is the fact that people pursue money and property here, where they dont need it, a sign that the “resource based economy” some advocte is going to come up slap bang against people’s desire to accumulate and own things?

  2. First of all.. I think quite a lot people wants to take the money out of SL. They want it to be real money (which means SL money Linden dollar ARE real money) If there wasnt any echonomy in SL there would be much less accounts. Our mindset and so many things in life is about money. We use money for so many things – also our most basic needs. Bringing up a child in our society without money would be more or less impossible – at least if you want your child to be able to “normal”. I think all this can change and that people are getting aware of that. Money is a detour prosperity. I dont say its easy right now but I´m sure when we have a resourse based echonomy we´re gonna look back and say -”why didnt we do this a long time ago?”
